Ce este colesterolul

Colesterolul este un compus esenţial atât pentru organismul uman cât şi pentru cel animal. Colesterolul este un sterol primar ce se găseşte în membrana celulelor din corpul uman. Este secretat de ficat, dar derivă şi din dieta alimentară. Deşi colesterolul este necesar pentru funcţionarea normală biochimică, este bine ştiut că are efect asupra dezvoltării arterosclerozei vasculare. Se estimează că aproximativ 70% din populaţia adultă din vest are nivelul colesterolului ridicat.
